About the Role

Canonical is seeking an exceptional professional to fill the position of Lead Data Governance Engineer. This role requires a strong background in data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring, with a focus on compliance with internal policies and applicable regulatory frameworks.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing Python-based tooling to automate the operations of an internal data mesh solution, including data labeling and quality metrics in accordance with data access management and data security best practices.

In this capacity, you will work closely with the Data Governance team to enable secure and well-governed access to comprehensive data sets originating from various internal and external data sources formed in a data mesh. The team utilizes well-known open-source data governance tools such as Trino and Ranger, defines and executes data governance processes, and democratizes data at Canonical.

Main Responsibilities

  • Data Governance: Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies to ensure adherence to internal policies and applicable regulatory frameworks.
  • Tooling Development: Design, implement, and maintain tooling for automated data mesh operations, including data labeling and quality metrics.
  • Service Deployment: Deploy and operate services developed by the team, ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure.
  • Mentorship: Depending on seniority, provide coaching, mentorship, and career development feedback to team members.
  • Engineering Practices: Develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices within the team.

What We're Looking For

  • Academic Background: Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
  • Technical Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about alternative chosen path.
  • Results-Oriented: Track record of going above-and-beyond expectations to achieve outstanding results.
  • Data Experience: Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools.
  • Programming Skills: Experience with software development in Python and SQL.
  • Communication: Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Travel Requirements: Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Performance Engineering: Experience with performance engineering and security.
  • Data Tools: Familiarity with Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino.
