Job Summary

This is a role for an individual to work on installing and repairing telecommunications cabling media, including coaxial, fiber optic, Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), main feeder cable, and other support structures. The job requires pulling cables through various building architectures, operating trenching equipment, and terminating Category 5 UTP, coaxial, and fiber optic cables at designated work stations and in telecommunication closets and distribution frames.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pull telecommunications cabling through a wide variety of building architectures, both permanent and temporary, including tactical, through buried conduit (outside plant) routed between buildings, ceilings, raised floors, and cable troths.
  • Operate trenching equipment and/or other heavy equipment as outlined in the performance work statement to complete mission requirements.
  • Terminate Category 5 UTP, coaxial, and fiber optic cables at designated work stations and in telecommunication closets and distribution frames.
  • Prepare telecommunications rooms/closets in buildings to function as central and secondary distribution nodes for telecommunications cabling networks.
  • Install hardware/systems such as cable trays, ladder racks, J-Hooks, and/or D-rings to support telecommunications cable pulls.
  • Test and certify Category 5 UTP cabling, fiber optic, and main feeder cable with ohm meters, toners, and Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR).
  • Splice copper and fiber optic cabling.
  • Troubleshoot and correct both copper and fiber optic cable problems for lack of continuity, noise, signal loss, and degradation, improper termination, excessive loss, and intermittent problems.
  • Establish and maintain cable records, use database software such as Remedy to track and control job orders, interpret drawings to troubleshoot, install, and make recommendations for new facilities and upgrades.

Working Environment
The working environment will be approximately 60% indoor, 35% outside, and 5% in manholes and handholds. Climbing ladders, entering confined spaces, and driving over rough terrain are also required. Some maintenance tasks may expose you to insulation, extreme heat, water, and heights. You will also be required to stand for long periods of time. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Educational Background: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training provided by contract; BICSI: Cabling Installation Installer: Installer 2, Optical Fiber (INSTF) preferred.
  • Work Experience: Requires 5 – 7 years' experience in the cable, telephone, and Local Area Network installation and repair.
