Assistant Well Site Leader

I. General

Assists the Wellsite Leader in the supervision of well programs to a level determined by the Wellsite Leader. Builds on training and on-the-job exposure while developing skills related to becoming a wellsite Leader.

II. Relationship

• Reports to the Wellsite Leader.
• May be required to mentor wellsite engineers.
• Interacts with client wellsite representatives, drilling contractor supervisors, and service company representatives.

III. Responsibilities

QHSE

• The WSL shall demonstrate leadership in all aspects of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protection, ensuring safe working practices are followed.
• The ultimate objective of the AWSL is to conduct well operations safely, in accordance with the approved well operations program, compliance with policies, standards, procedures, regulatory requirements, within allocated time and budget, and with optimal resource utilization.
• Follow roles and responsibilities of the WSL at the rig site as detailed in the Standing Orders for Wellsite Leaders.

Planning and Coordination

• Organizes and leads pre-job safety and operations meetings related to well operations.
• Leads daily planning meetings and discusses operations with the toolpusher, segment, and third-party supervisors.
• Attends daily planning calls with supervisors from various parties.
• Maintains a look-ahead planner to anticipate resource requirements, ensuring operational efficiency and contingency planning.
• Checks that equipment and services comply with contractual agreements.
• Manages inventory of tangible items and rental equipment.
• Ensures equipment readiness through QA/QC checks.
• Ensures timely Material Requests to prevent operational disruptions.

Operations

• Ensures operations are conducted safely, preventing well control issues, stuck pipe, and other hazards.
• Issues standing instructions for drillers for each tour, routed through the toolpusher/rig manager.
• Follows SOPs and complete checklists as required.
• Prepares detailed procedures for critical operations like casing running and cementing.
• Performs wellsite calculations, e.g., cement jobs.
• Prepares for well control events (SCRs, leak-off tests, BOP tests, kick sheets, shut-in procedures).
• Prepares for stuck pipe events (first actions, maximum over-pull, fishing equipment).
• Supervises critical activities on the rig floor (landing, cementing, casing testing, flow checks, pulling stands).
• Participates in performance discussions to improve efficiency and reduce flat time.
• Implements contingency plans as needed.
• Prepares equipment lists and daily cost estimates.

Communications

• Prepares and communicates daily reports, including contributions from service companies, for approval and distribution.
• Prepares reports on casing, cementing, etc., as required.
• Prepares daily cost estimates for approval.
• Discusses Material Requests with Logistic Coordinators daily.
• Documents failures or incidents within 24 hours.
• Participates in program changes and suggests improvements.
• Initiates Management of Change (MOC) processes where required.
• Ensures proper handover to relief personnel.

Training & Development

• Mentors junior staff at the wellsite.
• Assesses rig crew readiness for well control events through drills.
• Conducts other drills such as emergency response as needed.

IV. Competencies and Behavior

The Assistant Wellsite Leader should have relevant experience, typically at least 5 years of seniority in oilfield drilling positions.
