The Electrician Journeyman installs, inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, operates, and maintains electrical systems and components of electrical power distribution and generating equipment. Performs operations and maintenance duties to maintain power to telecommunications equipment and maintains the facility's physical electrical distribution system in good repair. Reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and functions under their general direction. Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots and repairs wire circuits, including electrical equipment such as distribution panels, transformers, motor control circuits for motors, and control devices for various electrical devices and supporting electrical wiring distribution systems.
  • Connects electrical distribution systems for remote locations to on-site electrical generating equipment such as diesel generator sets and electrical distribution switchgear, including installation of panel boards, branch circuits, breakers, switches, conduit, and wiring.
  • Provides technical support for UPS, Generators, and HVAC systems.
  • Responsible for inspection and maintenance of all electrical systems, including electrical appliances and outlets (GFI circuits, emergency lighting, fire alarm systems).
  • Performs start/run operational inspections on generator sets and full load/facility load tests, routine operational checks of electrical switchgear, power cabling, and transformers.
  • Installs or repairs electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, facility UPSs, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, conduit systems, or other transmission equipment, working from blueprints, drawings, layouts, or specifications.
  • Diagnoses electrical system or equipment troubles, performing load calculations and using electrician's hand tools and testing instruments.
  • Possesses working knowledge of exterior and interior secondary power distribution, lighting, access control, lightning protection, and grounding systems.
  • Knowledge of MIL Standards and DOD customer requirements is required. Must have excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with generator-produced power and switching systems up to 380V.
  • Familiarity with the British electrical code and connectors.
  • Knowledge of Facility UPSs and smaller rack-mounted UPSs.
  • Familiarity with HVAC electrical systems.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education/Certifications: One year of related experience may substitute for one year of education if a degree is required.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

  • At least 5-7 years of work experience in the electrical wiring industry, including planning, laying out, and installing electrical distribution systems according to NEC standards, under the supervision of a qualified electrician.
  • Experience should include electrical installation in commercial and industrial settings, with no more than 75% in any one category.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, including secondary distribution and interior systems, starting from the facility service entrance conductors at the low voltage side of the transformer.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical circuits, power cables, controls, motors, conduit bending, and related tools and test equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints, produce single-line diagrams, and rough shop drawings.
