Job Description

The Electrical Systems Specialist installs, inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, operates, and maintains electrical systems and components of electrical power distribution and generating equipment. They perform operations and maintenance duties to maintain power to telecommunications equipment and maintain the facility's physical electrical distribution system in good repair.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting and repairing wire circuits, including electrical equipment such as distribution panels, transformers, motor control circuits for motors and control devices for various electrical devices and supporting electrical wiring distribution systems.

They connect electrical distribution systems for remote locations to on-site electrical generating equipment, including installation of panel boards, branch circuits, breakers, switches, conduit, and wiring. The specialist provides technical support functions to UPS, Generators, and HVACs.

Key responsibilities also include inspection and maintenance of all electrical systems, including electrical appliances and outlets (including GFI circuits, emergency lighting, and central fire alarm systems).

They perform start/run operational inspections on generator sets and full load/facility load tests, routine operational checks of all electrical switch-gear, power cabling, and transformers.

The Electrician Journeyman installs or repairs any of a variety of electrical equipment, including generators, transformers, facility UPSs, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, conduit systems, or other transmission equipment.

Diagnosing trouble in the electrical system or equipment requires working standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment and using a variety of electrician's hand tools and measuring and testing instruments.

Working knowledge of Exterior Secondary Power Distribution, Interior Secondary Power Distribution, Interior, Exterior, Perimeter and Area Lighting, Access Control System, Lightning Protection System, Grounding Systems is required.

Knowledge of MIL Standards and DOD customers is necessary. Excellent communications skills are mandatory.

Work is performed in an operational environment in Southwest Asia and may require working an uncommon tour of duty and extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Extreme hot and cold weather conditions must be endured. Physical fitness requirements must be met to be deemed fit for duty, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be worn.

Estimated travel within theater is 60%. Experience with generator-produced power and switching systems producing up to 380v is required.

Familiarity with the British electrical code and connectors, Facility UPSs and smaller, rack mountable UPSs, and HVAC electrical systems is essential.

Qualifications and Requirements

A high school education or equivalent is required. Accredited professional trade school or successful completion of apprenticeship program certification is necessary.

State Journeyman Electrician card possession is required. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training is provided by contract.

At least 5-7 years' experience in the electrical wiring industry is necessary, including experience in planning, laying out, and installing electrical distribution systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).

Experience shall have been under the direct supervision of a qualifying electrician for a licensed electrical contractor.

Electrical work experience shall include electrical installation in commercial and industrial categories, with no more than 75% of experience in one category.

Management/supervisory experience is desired.

Working knowledge of electrical systems, including secondary distribution and interior systems, is essential.

Hands-on experience with accepted trade practices involving electrical circuits, power cables, controls, motors, bending of conduit, etc. Hands-on experience with tools, test equipment, and materials involved in electrical work, and the ability to read blueprints, produce basic single-line diagrams, and rough shop drawings is necessary.
