Reporting to the Head of the Athletics Department, the incumbent will oversee the use of athletic facilities by students and staff, monitor facilities, lead fitness classes, and conduct personal training sessions. The Head Trainer will develop a strong sports and fitness culture, emphasizing competition, social interaction, and healthy lifestyles. Additionally, the role involves teaching Health & Wellness classes and organizing major departmental events.

Job Purpose:

Serve as a lead fitness and sports instructor/trainer within the university's sports and fitness programs. The Head Trainer will work closely with students by leading fitness sessions, personal training, and coaching university sports teams.

  • Oversee daily operations of the Athletic Center and related programs.
  • Support and advise on athletics programs, scheduling, and maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Participate in Athletics Department discussions, decision-making, and policy development.
  • Ensure compliance with interuniversity and campus sports policies and standards.
  • Lead coaching sessions for university sports teams and organize inter-university fixtures and tournaments.
  • Conduct small group personal training sessions with students.
  • Lead practical sessions for the university's credit-bearing Health and Wellness course.
  • Assist in planning, implementing, and promoting athletic programs, including varsity sports, intramurals, and fitness classes.
  • Establish policies and standards for recreational groups and teams.
  • Develop partnerships with campus departments, faculty, staff, students, and community members to promote engagement.
  • Manage social media communication for athletic activities and collaborate on publicity and reporting.
  • Work evenings and weekends as required; travel may be necessary; perform other duties as assigned.

  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Effective collaboration with diverse groups within and outside the university.
Experience and Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Sport Management, or related field; or significant experience with fitness coaching certification.
  • Qualified Personal Trainer certification.
  • Experience in competitive sports programs (interuniversity, intramural, club), with governing body qualifications preferred.
  • Experience managing or working with coaching and support staff.
  • Experience teaching credit-bearing PE/Wellness courses.
  • Experience supervising coaches and referees.
  • CPR/AED certification or equivalent, or ability to obtain certification, preferred.
