Help support and develop comprehensive evidence-based diabetic and vascular foot services. To provide high-quality clinical care for diabetic and vascular foot complications.
Detailed Duties and Responsibilities
- To identify and manage diabetic foot complications
- To assess, diagnose, and formulate evidence-based diabetic foot ulcer/wound management with knowledge of tissue viability and experience in treating chronic diabetes foot ulceration and other care group conditions.
- Experience of working or using specialist skills in the care of the diabetic foot.
- Involvement in health promotion and disease management
- To critically analyze and apply clinical reasoning skills in the selection of appropriate assessment techniques including neurological, vascular, dermatological, biomechanical, and other podiatric assessments in the context of diabetes podiatric practice.
- The knowledge and ability to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the vascular and neurological status of the lower limb including use of Doppler, Ankle Brachial Pressure Index calculation, and tests for sensory and motor dysfunction.
- The ability to recognize, detect, and understand the importance of peripheral arterial disease and related clinical pathologies and refer for vascular assessment and interventions in a timely manner.
- A high standard of wound care including sharp debridement skills and knowledge of standard and advanced topical and adjunct therapies.
- The ability to detect signs of infection, to determine the level of infection, take tissue samples, interpret results, and initiate appropriate timely actions/referrals.
- Knowledge of and experience in the prescription and fitting of orthotic devices, casting techniques, and provision of off-loading devices.
- Good knowledge and experience in nail surgery.
- To provide general foot care and management of foot-related pathologies.
- Knowledge and experience of implementing effective models of Podiatry assessments and treatments.
- The ability to evaluate information, problem-solve, and make effective decisions.
- The ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- To have effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- To conduct audit, research, and report writing.
- To comply with relevant hospital and departmental policies.
Education/Qualifications/Training:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Podiatric Medicine
- Minimum 3 years post-graduate experience
- Certificate of Local Anaesthesia
- HCPC registration
- Evidence of Continual Professional Development
Required Experience:
- Diabetic foot screening and risk stratification
- Diabetic foot ulcer/wound management
- Managing autonomous clinical caseloads
- Multidisciplinary team working
